Digital signage is a form of advertising in which content and messages are displayed on an electronic screen. Digital signage has an edge over more traditional marketing materials in that you can deliver effective advertising, information or entertainment instantly, and via digital signage networks you can make changes to the information remotely.
The content displayed on digital signage screens can range from simple text and still images to full motion video, with or without audio.
Digital signage solutions consist of LCD screens that can be built to any specification. All LCD screens can be fitted with a Compact Flash card reader which ensures that no external playback source (e.g. DVD player) is required.
LCD screens are suitable for any environment and used in many applications:
- Information updates – examples include the updating of flight information in airports, or train schedules at train stations;
- Advertising – examples include in-store promotions in retail environments, duty free promotions in airports and third party advertising, e.g. restaurants that advertise on behalf of local merchants and national advertisers;
- Enhanced customer experience – examples include digital signage units in doctors waiting rooms, restaurant waiting areas and airport lounges, or recipe demonstrations in food stores, aimed at reducing the perception of wait-time;
- Influencing customer behavior – examples include digital signage units which direct a customer to different areas of the store, increasing the time spent on the store premises;
- Brand building – digital signage units can increase brand awareness and drive sales in specific areas of the retail environment.
- Internal communication – communication to various branches or divisions in an organization takes the form of LCD or plasma units placed in strategic locations for staff to be instantaneously informed as well as entertained. These networks allow the screens to be divided into three segments providing a scroll bar for information, a segment for TV (such as DSTV) and a proportional advertising segment.
Digital signage is the key medium to deliver targeted information to a captive audience, thus increasing brand awareness in an entertaining manner.
