Corporate Advertising Trends for 2027: What South African Marketers Should Plan For
Estimated reading time: 8 minutes
Updated 5 November 2026 for 2027.
South Africa’s TV measurement changes on 1 January 2027. ChatGPT has also sold ads here since 21 October 2026. At the same time, viewers keep moving from pay-TV to YouTube. So your 2027 plan needs a fresh look.
This guide covers the corporate advertising trends that matter in South Africa. It also shows what each one means for your video.
What Is Corporate Advertising?
Corporate advertising promotes a whole company, not one product. It builds reputation, trust and visibility. Good examples show values such as safety, sustainability and innovation.
Corporate Advertising Trends for 2027: Key Takeaways
- South Africa’s new video currency, TVM, replaces TAMS on 1 January 2027.
- Digital keeps taking share from traditional TV, according to PwC.
- YouTube on the lounge TV now matters as much as mobile.
- Short, local-language and creator-led video keeps growing.
- AI search and ChatGPT ads change how buyers find brands.
- Retail media is growing, so brand and product video must fit retailer platforms.
- Trust and local content still win.
Trend 1: South Africa’s New TV Currency Starts on 1 January 2027
The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC) is changing how it measures video. On 1 January 2027, its new Total Video Measurement (TVM) service replaces TAMS. TVM covers television and measured online video in one daily currency.
The BRC says there is no interim TV-only period. TAMS stays the official currency until 31 December 2026. TVM test data is available from the end of October 2026, according to the BRC.
What it means for your video: Your TV and online results will sit side by side in one report. So plan your video for every screen. Make one strong master film, then cut versions for TV, YouTube and social media.
Trend 2: Video Moves from Pay-TV to YouTube and the Big Screen
Viewers keep leaving pay-TV. Google South Africa data, reported by digital agency TDMC, shows pay-TV subscribers fell 9.6% in a year to 6.7 million. About a third of linear TV advertisers are now cutting their TV budgets. Google and YouTube captured 30% of that shifted spend in the first quarter of 2026.
The same report says YouTube reaches more than 25 million South Africans a month. Connected TV makes up 32.6% of YouTube watch time in South Africa.
What it means for your video: People now watch YouTube on the lounge TV. So your video needs clean sound, steady shots and a sharp edit. Rough footage shows on a big screen.
Trend 3: Short, Local-Language and Creator-Led Video
TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts led video in 2025, according to a Bizcommunity review of the year. Brands also spent more on micro-influencers. Many added content in isiZulu, Setswana, isiXhosa, Afrikaans and Sepedi.
TDMC’s summary of the WARC Future of Media 2026 report adds a warning. Creator marketing is now a main brand-building channel. However, poor brand fit and weak measurement waste money.
What it means for your video: Shoot once, then cut short vertical versions. Add captions in the languages your audience speaks. Pick creators who fit your brand, not just the biggest reach.
Trend 4: AI Search and ChatGPT Ads Change How Buyers Find You
Since 21 October 2026, South African businesses can buy ads in ChatGPT through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager. South Africans on the free and Go plans have started seeing them, according to TDMC media director Caleb Shepard. He advises brands to earn the answer before buying the ad. He also calls it a capped test, not a core channel.
AI search matters too. TDMC’s WARC summary says generative engine optimisation (GEO) is a discipline most brands have not started.
What it means for your video: AI tools read text. So give every video captions, a transcript and a clear title. Add plain-language answers on the page around it.
Trend 5: AI-Made Creative Needs Human Judgement
AI tools now cut the cost of drafts, edits and versions. However, every brand can use them. Machine’s Kwena Semenya argues that judgement becomes the advantage when every brand can produce more.
What it means for your video: A clear idea and a real story set you apart. Real leaders, real sites and real staff still build trust.
Trend 6: Retail Media Gives Brands New Video Screens
Retail media is advertising inside retailer platforms, such as Takealot and Checkers. The MMA’s South African retail media report puts the market at R9 billion to R12 billion for 2025/26. It expects growth of about 12% a year to 2030.
Online shopping is growing fast too. World Wide Worx says Checkers Sixty60 sales grew 34.5% to R25.5 billion in the year to June 2026.
What it means for your video: If you sell through retailers, plan product videos for their platforms. Pair them with one brand film that tells your company story.
Trend 7: Trust and Local Content Still Win
PwC’s Africa Entertainment and Media Outlook for 2026 to 2030 expects South Africa’s market to grow from R301.8 billion in 2025 to R352.4 billion by 2030. Growth comes mostly from digital and connectivity-driven segments. Traditional TV, newspapers and magazines lose ground.
PwC’s Charles Stuart says great content, and increasingly local content, underpins everything. It creates the connection people want, as EWN reported. PwC also points to rising demand for live experiences. See the event live streaming cost guide if live is on your list.
What it means for your video: Put your leaders and staff on camera. Show your sites and your work. Use local languages and faces where they fit.
Which Corporate Advertising Trends Have Faded Since 2024?
Our 2024 list led with the metaverse, AR and chatbots. Here is how each one looks now:
| 2024 trend | What changed | What it means for video |
|---|---|---|
| Metaverse advertising | Not in this year’s local reports. TV, YouTube and AI dominate instead. | Skip it unless a client asks. |
| AR try-ons | Still useful for product demos, but not a headline trend in the sources we reviewed. | Use AR only where it shows a product better. |
| Conversational ads | Now ChatGPT ads and AI search. | Add transcripts and captions. |
| Shoppable ads and social commerce | Growing into retail media. | Plan product video for retailer platforms. |
| Influencer marketing 2.0 | Now creator marketing, a main brand channel. | Match creators to your brand. |
| Privacy-centric advertising | Still true. Consent and your own data matter. | Ask for consent before you collect data. |
| Experiential marketing | PwC points to rising demand for live experiences. | Film and stream your events. |
How to Act on These Corporate Advertising Trends Before 2027
You have weeks, not months. Work through this list:
- Ask your media partners for their TVM plan before 1 January.
- Make one hero film, then plan versions for TV, YouTube and social media.
- Add captions and transcripts. Use local languages where it fits.
- Review your video titles and web pages for AI search.
- Test ChatGPT ads with a small, capped budget, if at all.
- Feature your own leaders and staff. Real faces build more trust than stock footage or AI-made presenters.

No, but it is changing. PwC expects traditional TV to lose ground while digital grows. Google data reported by TDMC also shows viewers moving to YouTube on connected TV.
Should my brand advertise on ChatGPT?
Test it with a small, capped budget at most. TDMC advises earning visibility in organic answers first. It also notes that eMarketer calls ChatGPT ads a structured test, not a core channel.
